An introduction to Brighton
Brighton is a trendy seaside tourist resort located on the south east coast of England. Due to its numerous bars (over 400), clubs, restaurants, hotels and great beach Brighton is very popular amongst UK residents; but people from abroad also love coming here to learn English and to have fun. Brighton is also known as “London-by-the-sea”.There are two universities, the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex as well as a lot of good colleges and English language schools, so the city is home to a vibrant student community. Summer is the high season for language students who come to Brighton from all over Europe and the world to study English.
Brighton has a thriving cultural and arts scene with many museums and art galleries to visit, but also theatres and great music venues such as Theatre Royal, the Brighton Centre and the Dome. The Brighton Museum in the Pavilion Gardens houses some fascinating galleries, and the entrance is free.
Famous landmarks in Brighton include the Pavilion and the Pier. The Brighton Pavilion, which was built by Prince Regent, is renowned for its exotic oriental architecture and design which really stands out in the middle of the city’s Regency style buildings. The Pier has a lot of exciting attractions including arcade halls, restaurants and rides.
If you are in Brighton in May you can’t miss the Brighton Festival, which is one of the UK’s biggest and most famous arts festivals. It lasts for just under a month and all through it there are loads of brilliant concerts, comedies, exhibitions and street acts going on. May is probably one of the best times to come to Brighton, it isn’t quite as busy as the summer but it’s very warm and it has that great “getting ready for summer” feeling.
